Endogenous Party Identities
نویسندگان
چکیده
A party develops its identity by adopting biased policy positions consistently over time. Existing rational voting models explain distinct party identities by assuming intrinsic policy-motivated parties or candidates. We show that distinct party identities may arise when parties are purely o ce-motivated in a dynamic setting with impressionable voters. In particular, a voter is more likely to vote for a party if she has had a positive experience with the party in the past. As voters' experiences depend on chosen policies, impressionable voting creates a dynamic linkage between policy choices across time. We show that the heterogeneity of the electorate is su cient to induce distinct party identities. ∗Dean and Emmott Dedman Professor, Harris School of Public Policy, The University of Chicago, 1155 60th Street, Chicago, IL 60637, [email protected] and Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, CIFAR Program on Institutions, Organizations, and Growth, CIFAR, Toronto, ON M5G 1Z8. †Department of Economics, Northwestern University, 2001 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL. 60208, [email protected]

Party Identification and Core Political Values
Party identification and core political values are central elements in the political belief systems of ordinary citizens. Are these predispositions related to one another? Does party identification influence core political values or are partisan identities grounded in such values? This article draws upon theoretical works on partisan information processing and value-based reasoning to derive co...
متن کاملHow Strong Should Our Party Be? Party Member Preferences Over Party Cohesion
In this article, we seek to explain when and why political parties pressure their members to vote with the party. We model party cohesion as an endogenous choice of preference alignment by party members. Couched in Krehbiel’s (1996, 1998) pivotal politics model, the formal theory advanced here shows party cohesion to be related to the initial preference alignment of party members, the divergenc...
متن کاملA Self-certified and Sybil-Free Framework for Secure Digital Identity Domain Buildup
An attacker who can control arbitrarily many user identities can break the security properties of most conceivable systems. This is called a “Sybil attack”. We present a solution to this problem that does not require online communication with a trusted third party and that in addition preserves the privacy of honest users. Given an initial so-called Sybil-free identity domain, our proposal can ...
متن کاملParty Platforms with Endogenous Party Membership
In representative democracies, the development of party platforms depends on both ideological and electoral considerations. Decisions on party membership, on the other hand, are driven by the relative desirability of party platforms. This paper analyzes the dynamic interaction between party platforms and party membership. It shows how voter mobility, membership costs and the possibility of alie...
متن کاملENDOGENOUS RELEASE OF OPIATES BY REPETITIVE ELECTRICAL FIELD STIMULATION IN THE GUINEA-PIG AND RAT ILEAL LONGITUDINAL MUSCLE
The effect of repetitive electrical field stimulation and the response of the guinea-pig and rat ileal longitudinal muscle to single pulse stimulations was examined. Single pulse field stimulation produced twitch contraction which was inhibited by repetitive field stimulation (10 Hz, 40V, 0.5 msec for 5 m). This inhibition was largely, though never completely, reversed by naloxone. Contrac...
